Winter can be a tricky season when it comes to entertaining kids. With shorter days and colder weather, it’s sometimes difficult to come up with activities that both children and parents will enjoy. But if you have a child on the autism spectrum, you may be concerned about finding activities that are also autism-friendly. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here are five fun winter activities that your family can enjoy together while still being autism-friendly.
Five Fun Winter Activities:
- Make Snow Art – Who says art has to stay indoors? Bundle up your family and head outside with colorful spray bottles filled with water and food coloring to make beautiful snow art! This activity is great for sensory input and for providing visual stimulation for children on the autism spectrum. Plus, it’s an easy way to get out of the house without having to worry about social interactions or loud noises.
- Have a Movie Night – Nothing beats curling up with blankets on the couch during a cold winter day to watch a movie together as a family. Be sure to pick movies that are appropriate for all ages and interests, including movies specifically geared towards those on the autism spectrum, such as “Rain Man” or “Inside Out.” This is also a great opportunity to talk about the movie afterward and discuss what themes resonated most with each member of your family.
- Bake Some Goodies – Baking can be an enjoyable experience for everyone in your family, regardless of age or ability level! Set aside time to bake some yummy treats together—cookies, brownies, muffins…there are so many options! Let each person choose their favorite recipe or create something original together as a team. Not only is baking delicious, but it also encourages creativity, builds confidence in young bakers, and provides meaningful sensory experiences through smell and touch.
- Build a Snowman – It’s not winter without building at least one snowman! Get creative by using everyday items from around the house, like buttons, scarves, hats, etc., to dress up your snowman (or snowwoman!) For extra fun (and warmth!), build two snowmen facing each other, then fill them up with hot chocolate mix before heading back inside for cocoa by the fire!
- Visit Your Local Ice Rink – If you’re looking for another outdoor activity to keep everyone warm while having fun together as a family, visit your local ice rink! While this activity may be intimidating initially since skating involves coordination between various body parts while balancing slippery surfaces, it can be very rewarding once mastered! And don’t forget about those adorable little penguin trainers they offer at some rinks, which provide extra stability and security while skating around the rink hand-in-hand with Mom or Dad!
Winter activities don’t have to feel overwhelming if you have an autistic child in your family. Remember that everyone has different needs and interests when it comes to engaging in activities during cold weather months, so find something that works best for everyone involved! Whether it’s making snow art outside or visiting an ice rink down the street, there are plenty of ways for families with autism to have fun this winter season without sacrificing quality time spent together and providing meaningful tactile experiences along the way!
