Labor Day is all about taking a break, spending time with family, and giving a little love to the people who work hard every day. It’s also a great excuse to sit down with your child and do something creative together.
At Circle City ABA, we like to use holidays like Labor Day as chances to build skills in fun and simple ways. Crafts are a great way to do that. They give kids the chance to follow directions, work with their hands, and show off their creativity. And maybe best of all—it’s time spent together.
Below is one of our favorite Labor Day craft ideas. It’s easy to set up, fun for all ages, and perfect for starting a conversation about the people in our communities who help keep everything running.
Labor Day Craft: “Thank You Worker” Handprint Art
This hands-on activity gives your child a way to say thank you to people who work in your community. It’s a sweet and simple way to talk about jobs like firefighters, teachers, mail carriers, and so many more.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- A sheet of white paper or cardstock
- Washable paint in any color (or go with red, white, and blue)
- A paintbrush
- Markers or crayons
- Wet wipes or a sink nearby for clean-up
- Optional: stickers or fun decorations
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Get your space ready
Cover your table with newspaper or a washable tablecloth. Lay out your supplies so everything is within reach.
Step 2: Paint your child’s hand
Use the brush to cover their hand with paint. Let them choose their favorite color or pick a holiday theme.
Step 3: Make the handprint
Press their painted hand onto the paper. Try to press down evenly, then lift straight up. Set it aside to dry for a few minutes.
Step 4: Add a message
Once dry, help your child write a simple message under the handprint. A few ideas:
- “Thank you for working hard!”
- “Happy Labor Day!“
- “Thanks to our helpers!”
Step 5: Time to decorate
Let your child add their own touch. They can draw hats, tools, or stars. Stickers and glitter are great, too.
Step 6: Share it
Hang the finished art on the fridge, in a window, or give it to a neighbor, teacher, or local worker. It’s a small way to brighten someone’s day.
Why Crafts Like These Matter
