At Circle City ABA, we know that progress looks different for every child. For some, it starts with one quiet moment. For others, it’s the first time they ask for something without words. This story celebrates a young client who found his voice through functional communication and how it’s changing his life at home and at the center.
Kindly note: Therapy is a very personal experience, and, as with any other treatment, results are not uniform. Many factors determine if a child will benefit from therapy, including individual characteristics, the nature of their needs, and how well the child is receiving support at home and/or school.
From Constant Motion to Focused Moments
When this client first came to Circle City ABA, he didn’t have any functional way to communicate. He spent most of his time moving, running around the center without stopping. Sitting down, following directions, or staying with a task was difficult for him.
That’s where therapy began. His team focused on helping him feel safe, supported, and understood. They gave him space to move when needed, but also introduced simple tasks in a calm, predictable way.
Learning to Communicate with Pictures
As part of his therapy, the team introduced the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This tool uses pictures to help children ask for things, express needs, or answer questions.
At first, the idea was new. But with practice, this client began to understand that using a picture could help him get what he wanted—whether it was a snack, a toy, or a break.
Over time, something clicked.
- He began staying in his assigned space.
- He participated in programming activities.
- He started completing short play tasks.
Then came a special moment: the first day he brought his PECS book home.
A Big Moment at Home
That night, something amazing happened. At home, without anyone asking or reminding him, he picked up his picture book and used it to talk with his family. It was the first time he’d done that—using the same tool he’d been practicing with during therapy.
The next day, his dad came in beaming. He couldn’t wait to share what had happened. You could see how proud he was. The whole team lit up. It was one of those moments that remind us why we do this work.
This wasn’t just a win in therapy—it was a win for the whole family.
The Power of Functional Communication
Communication, even in small ways, can change everything for a child. Frustration starts to ease. Stronger relationships begin to form. Children gain more control over their world.
For this client, learning to use pictures has opened a door. He’s calmer. More focused. He knows he can be heard.
