Real-Life Transformations: A Successful Dentist Visit for a Child with Autism

Going to the dentist can be stressful for anyone. For children with autism, it can feel overwhelming—the bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, and new faces can make even a short appointment a major challenge. But with preparation, practice, and the right support, change is possible.

At Circle City ABA, we celebrate real stories of progress. This transformation highlights how consistent ABA therapy, family collaboration, and simple everyday strategies helped one child have a successful dental visit for the very first time.

Building Confidence Through Preparation

Before this dental visit, this client found dental appointments very difficult. In past visits, he had shown aggression, refused to open his mouth, and could not complete even basic steps of the dental exam. His mother felt anxious every time they had to schedule another appointment.

Through ongoing ABA therapy, the family and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) focused on preparation. The BCBA worked with the family to create small, manageable steps that gradually increased the child’s comfort level. They practiced skills like sitting in a chair, following instructions, and staying calm during short tasks.

The child’s mother also participated in Family Training Goals (FTGs). During these sessions, she learned antecedent strategies—techniques that set the stage for success before a challenging situation happens. For example, she knew how to give clear choices, provide visual reminders, and use positive reinforcement when her child followed directions.

This teamwork between the BCBA, the family, and the child laid the foundation for the big day.

A Calm and Positive Dentist Visit

When the day came, the BCBA joined the family for the community outing to the dentist. Everyone was hopeful but realistic—success didn’t mean perfection; it meant progress.

The visit began in the waiting room. The child waited for up to 20 minutes, calmly playing games and watching the movie on the TV. This was already a huge win compared to past visits.

When it was time to go back, he walked to the exam room, sat in the chair, and listened to every instruction the first time it was given. The dentist was able to complete scans, check his teeth, and clean his teeth without any signs of aggression or refusal.

For the first time, what was once a source of stress became a moment of pride. The BCBA and the family celebrated this milestone together, knowing that each small step led to this breakthrough.

How ABA Therapy Makes Everyday Life Easier

ABA therapy isn’t just about teaching new skills—it’s about making everyday life more manageable and meaningful. Visits to the dentist, grocery store, or even a haircut can all become opportunities for growth.

At Circle City ABA, therapists work closely with families to understand each child’s unique needs. Together, they design strategies for real-world situations. These small victories build confidence, independence, and happiness over time.
