The holiday season can be an exciting yet overwhelming time for families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there are many autism-friendly events and activities in Georgia that allow kids of all abilities to experience the magic of the holidays. In this blog post, Circle City ABA shares some of autism-friendly holiday activities in Georgia.
Autism-Friendly Holiday Activities in Georgia
One excellent option is Zoo Atlanta’s sensory-friendly celebration on select dates in December. The zoo turns down music, dims lights, and reduces crowds to create a calmer environment. Kids can visit Santa in a quiet indoor setting, watch a holiday-themed animal show, and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. The zoo also has quiet zones if anyone needs a break.
Several malls around Atlanta, like Lenox Square Mall, offer Caring Santa events with adjusted hours, reduced noise and crowds, and more time for each child with the big guy himself. Kids with autism often benefit from having a specific timeslot so there’s no waiting in line. Ask your local mall if they provide a Caring Santa experience.
The Center for Puppetry Arts offers autism-friendly performances of its holiday puppet shows. Adjustments include reduced sound and light effects, and some shows are performed without puppets at all. It’s best to call ahead to ask about specific accommodations.
Enjoy dazzling holiday light displays without leaving your car! The Georgia Renaissance Festival hosts a drive-through Fantasy of Lights event featuring over two million lights. At Holiday Road in Braselton, Chateau Elan has transformed into a winter wonderland with stunning, sensory-friendly light displays and festive activities.

No matter what you choose to do this season, the key is keeping things low-key, prepping your child so they know what to expect, and having an exit plan in case your kid gets overwhelmed. Don’t be afraid to take breaks or leave early. Focus on creating joyful moments together at your child’s pace. With a bit of planning, Georgia offers many ways for families affected by autism to experience the magic of the holidays.
